Is there a way to keep skype running on my iphone?

I’m sure this has probably been asked before but here goes..
I have an iphone 3g and i want to speak to someone internationally for free so i downloaded skype, this person also has skype on their iphone, however once on skype- as soon as i push the button on my iphone (the ‘home’ button) then it puts me offline, meaning i have to basically have the app open at all times incase that person rings/messages.
I don’t really want to jailbreak my phone, is there something i can get/buy so i always get notified if someone is ringing/texting me through skype??

the only program I know of that works is Iocom Visimeet
it’s free to d/l and the person overseas can call you on your phone for free
it’s also free to video with them on your computer.
